Andy Carroll advised to play it cool

The fact Carroll still has a court case for an alleged assault to face in the autumn illustrates he has had his problems off the pitch and former United skipper Alan Shearer has also warned him about maintaining his focus on football.

Campbell (pictured above) said: “I have not marked Andy Carroll in training yet, but I think he is definitely a great prospect. He has got to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground and concentrates on football. That is the main thing. “You have got to keep on working hard because you can’t just turn the tap on and turn it off.

“It doesn’t work like that. As long as he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps working hard, I am sure he is going to keep on pushing. I am sure he is definitely one for the future for club and for country.”

Carroll’s importance to United’s cause is already obvious, particularly as Hughton is impressed with his five-man midfield, with Kevin Nolan playing just behind a lone striker, so far this season. As a result, United could do without any long term injuries concerns.

Hughton said: “It’s an ankle problem and it would have kept him out of a game this weekend if we had one, that’s for sure. It looks like it is one that will clear up with rest and that is what he is doing at the moment.

“He went over on it. He didn’t train at the back end of last week and only passed a fitness test on Saturday morning before the Wolves game. After the game, the ankle had swollen badly and we knew then he wouldn’t be able to play for the Under-21s.

“We will have to take another look at him when the players came back at the start of next week, but I don’t envisage it being anything serious. It should just settle down again.”

PLAYERS’ chief Gordon Taylor has welcomed the introduction of the new 25-man squad rules for Premier League clubs – but will not be happy until more English youngsters are regularly making the first XI.

Taylor said: “Some of them go out on loan, but they are just not getting opportunities.”
