Mike Ashley's approach has desired effect

Newcastle United were strangely quiet on deadline day but Chris Hughton will be pretty happy with what he has managed to do with one hand tied behind his back. Chief Sports Writer Luke Edwards reports.
Initially here on loan, he also has a point to prove after his summer sulk at Marseille and the need to turn a temporary stay on Tyneside into a permanent one.
Dan Gosling is a fine prospect and a bargain on a free transfer after his contract dispute with Everton, while the capture of Sol Campbell as another free agent adds steel, experience and proven top-flight class at the back.
As for Cheik Tiote, not too much is known about this defensive midfielder, but he is Newcastle’s most expensive signing at £3m.
He was an integral part of the FC Twente side which lifted the Dutch title under Steve McClaren last season and a regular in the Ivory Coast national side.
Newcastle were not the only English club interested in signing him but he has still come to St James’s Park.
He offers competition and cover in a midfield department which is likely to deploy five more often than not this season, although much will depend on how quickly he adapts to the Premier League.
As ever, though, we should add a note of caution. Five new signings at a rough cost – including signing on fees and wages – of £13m has clearly increased Newcastle’s chances of survival.
But the Magpies arguably remain just four or five injuries and suspensions away from major problems. Luck will need to be on their side in the treatment room, as well as on the pitch.
