Cramlington families' anguish at deaths of two best friends

Jean Harrington, from Byker, who's son Christopher killed himself at Cramlington

AN INQUEST was opened yesterday into the deaths of two best friends found hanging in a wood.

The bodies of Christopher Harrington, 20, and 19-year-old Kieran Kenny, were discovered near the Brockwell Centre in Cramlington, Northumberland, by an elderly dog walker earlier this week.

Paul Dunn, assistant deputy coroner in Blyth, opened and adjourned an inquest into the suspected suicide pact yesterday.

Police are still investigating the tragedy although they believe it did not involve a third party.

Both of the young men were identified by their fathers, Peter Harrington and Michael Kenny.

Mr Dunn told the court: “Police received a call from ambulance control that two persons had been found hanging at the rear of Brockwell shopping centre.

“An elderly resident had discovered the scene while walking the dog and there were no others present.

“Both of the deceased were identified by their respective members of the family.

“A post mortem was carried out at Wansbeck General Hospital. In both cases it has been confirmed that the cause of death was hanging. Both are subject to further examination by toxicological tests.”

Chris’ father Peter told how seven letters addressed to relatives were laid out on a table at the home they shared, in Delamere Crescent, Cramlington.
