“It is plain that her immediate an extended family will feel the loss for years to come.”
Harrison had an extensive criminal record, mainly in relation to drugs and dishonesty offences, but also a conviction for dangerous driving in 2000.
He had lengthy experience of vehicles after training as a mechanic, but had held a driving licence for only a year, the court was told.
Harrison was driving at around 20mph when the accident took place in Wilson Row in the early evening of May 15 last year.
The judge said Mrs McCreadie’s family would find the sentence “wholly inadequate” but no price could be put on the loss of life. Harrison will serve 12 months in jail and the remainder on licence.
He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to take an extended test before returning to the roads.
Outside court, Mr McCreadie said: “It changes nothing for us. We are the ones given a life sentence.
“I am sure Andrew Harrison is deeply upset, but by pleading not guilty he put the entire family through the ordeal of the trial and having to relive the episode. In my eyes it was cowardice.
“I love and miss Ben and Anne-Marie so very much.”
Robert Wynn-Jones, defending, said his client’s life had been blighted with drugs from a young age, but to his credit he had managed to turn round his life on his own.
By pleading not guilty he put the family through the ordeal of the trial . . . it was cowardice
