The gym’s Albert Smith, who will be a ring corner man on the night, said: “When the poets come to the gym I’m not sure what sort of response they will get.
“But it will be something different and I thought it was worth doing. It will be as close to a boxing format as possible.”
The poetry boxing bouts were the idea of council arts development officer Julie Turnbull.
Council arts development manager Mike Campbell said: “The competitive element will be a lot of fun and the event is an opportunity for people to hear good poets doing their stuff.
“I believe some of the poets will be getting into the spirit of things by adopting ring names.”
Glynis Barrie, council cabinet member for community services, said: “This unique event is extremely exciting and is a great addition to our Year of the Arts initiative.
“Hopefully the bouts will open up the world of poetry to a whole new audience.”
Claire Morgan, programme co-ordinator in the North East for Apples and Snakes, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity, as two completely different worlds collide.
“It will give poetry a new voice through the sport of boxing.”
The event on June 5 begins at 7.30pm To book tickets, which cost £7 (£5 concessions), contact (0191) 643 7093.
