THIS is how close a motorist came to death after yobs launched a missile at her car as she drove under a footbridge across the A1.

Lucy Duggan was left wrestling with the controls of her following the mindless early morning attack from the bridge 30ft above her.

Last night the 20-year-old told of her lucky escape after the metal object was thrown, causing hundreds of pounds of damage to the bonnet of her Ford Fiesta at Fawdon, Newcastle.

Reliving her ordeal, Ms Duggan, a barmaid of Red House Farm, Gosforth, Newcastle, said: “It was terrifying.

“I was driving along the A1 at around 1am when all of a sudden, what I believe to be a road sign just came crashing down on my bonnet. I froze in fear, it really was frightening.

“Because it happened during the early hours there were no other cars on the road.

“But if there was, the situation could have been very different. I could have smashed into another car or anything.

“The object was thrown from a height from a footbridge. Whoever did this obviously thought it was a bit of fun. But inches closer and this could have killed or seriously injured me.”
