AN investigation has been launched after an ambulance on an emergency call collided with a car on the A1 in Northumberland and overturned.
Two elderly people in the car were injured in the collision, which happened when the ambulance left its base in Belford to pick up a patient needing transport to Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington.
The accident happened on the A1 at its junction with the B1342 and involved a Peugeot 407 car.
A 74-year-old woman, who was a front seat passenger in the car, suffered suspected head injuries while the 75-year-old driver suffered whiplash injuries and was trapped in the vehicle.
The ambulance landed on its side in the collision but its crew members were not injured.
Two ambulances were called to the incident.
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service sent two crews, from Belford and Berwick, and used cutting gear to free the driver of the car.
