Nominations wanted for North East School Awards
Mar 27 2010 by Nicola Juncar, The Journal
THEY are the unsung heroes of education but now they could be in line for honours in an awards scheme run by The Journal.
The North East School Awards – run in association with the Evening Gazette on Teesside and main sponsors Northumbrian Water – includes categories for support staff and caretakers.
The aim of the awards is to celebrate the great work taking place every day in our region’s schools – including that of caretakers, dinner ladies and classroom assistants who help schools run as successfully as they do.
Last year, the Caretaker of the Year award was Jim Wood from Glendale Middle School, in Wooler, Northumberland.
He has been the caretaker for six years and during that time he has transformed the environment of the school and opened it up to community use more than ever before.
On nominating him, headteacher Ruth Bull said: “He is not just a caretaker but an essential and much valued member of our team.
“Glendale would be a sorrier place without him and it would certainly not look the way it does now.”
Last year’s winner of the Support Staff of the Year award was Anna Bent, from Durham Gilesgate Sports College, in Durham City.
There are 10 awards in total – five are individual awards and five are for projects.
Individual awards are for Inspirational Primary School Teacher; Inspirational Secondary School Teacher; Support Staff of the Year; Headteacher of the Year and Caretaker of the Year.
The project awards are Sustainable School Award; Healthy School Award; Change4life Award; Active Community Award and School Newspaper Award. Winners of a project award will receive £1,000, with two runners-up receiving 250 each. Individual award winners will get £250, with runners-up receiving £100.
The closing date for entries is May 5 and an awards ceremony will be staged at Newcastle’s Centre for Life in July.
More information will be sent out to schools across the region. However, if you know of a deserving person or project please get in touch because we want to hear about them.
