Durham prison guards stabbed by Kevan Thakrar

Frankland Prison in Durham

AN inmate suspected of stabbing three Durham prison guards with a shard of glass is in jail for executing three men with a machine gun.

Kevan Thakrar is understood to have been removed from HMP Frankland, Durham, following the attack with a glass shard from a vinegar bottle inside the jail on Saturday.

The 22-year-old was serving a 35-year minimum sentence in the high-security prison with his brother Miran for settling a £10,000 drugs debt with murder.

Last night guard Craig Wylde was described as stable at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary after surgery on the foot-long wound he is suspected of suffering at Thakrar’s hands. A female prison warden chased and stabbed twice in the back, and a second male guard injured in the frenzy, were also said to be recovering.

Thakrar is suspected of carrying out the attack after barricading himself in his cell for almost 24 hours, in a bid to be placed in segregation with his older brother, 25.

In 2008 the pair were convicted of a triple murder. A court heard they made their victims kneel down before opening fire on them with a Mac-10 sub-machine gun, in Hertfordshire, in 2007.

When they ran out of bullets the killers turned on a female victim at the scene with a knife, the court was told.

Durham Police have confirmed an investigation into Saturday’s attack at Frankland has been launched and the prisoner involved has been removed to a separate prison.
