Brown and Cameron warned on job-loss competition

“To those who say there will have to be cuts in the public sector, which ever party they are from, do not think we will stand by while you attack people who have done nothing to deserve this. To David Cameron and George Osborne especially, we will not let this happen. We have seen what a Tory Government wants to do to our public services.
“Politicians of any party had better think twice before talking about cuts. We did not create this crisis and we should not be made to pay for it.”
Mr Prentis added that the Prime Minister too should not take union support for granted.
He was joined by GMB senior organiser Colin Smith who said unions should be prepared to tell Labour councillors and MPs that union funds will go unless they lend their support.
He said: “If they do not oppose these cuts then we have a duty as a union to remove them from office.
“We have had 13 years of a Labour Government and yet we are still fighting to protect the public sector.”
The unions have said they will campaign alongside each other to try to stop thousands of jobs cuts.
Northern TUC Regional Secretary Kevin Rowan said: “This is a vital campaign, one especially critical for this region.
“Public spending and the presence of a robust public sector are features that have stopped the economy moving from crisis to meltdown and have particularly helped this region to weather the worst storms of the current economic situation.”
