Newcastle University study reveals baby survival prospects

“There has previously been a lack of strong evidence to help medical professionals contend with the questions that parents understandably have after a child is born with a congenital abnormality, so it is to be hoped that this work can have a positive impact.”

It is hoped the detailed research will also give parents whose baby has been diagnosed with a congenital defect before birth a better understanding as to its life-expectancy so they can make important, informed decisions.

“Obviously, parents want to have as much information as possible before making a decision as to whether to continue with a pregnancy or not,” explained Dr Rankin.

“One of the most frequently asked questions is about the life-expectancy of a child and this research can be used to help answer important questions such as this.

“We have been pleasantly surprised with some of the results as they are extremely encouraging. A Congenital Abnormality Register is certainly something worth funding.

“Our plan is to continue monitoring those on the register and we may do a 25-year review, which could act as an important follow-up.”

Dr Rankin also said a further study was being considered to focus on the quality of life experienced by those on the register.

The findings have been extremely interesting and will be of great use to parents
