PUPILS were charged with the task yesterday of striving to make sure that their school is the most eco-friendly in County Durham.

Around 25 schools will take part in a two-pronged contest, which is the first of series of community projects by the North East Technology Park (NETPark), near Sedgefield in County Durham.

Yesterday, students from Greencroft Business and Enterprise Community School in Stanley, Moorside College in Consett and Tudhoe Grange School in Spennymoor, gathered at NETPark to launch the challenge .

Branded “Recharging the Earth”, the competition is a collaboration between electronics giant SANYO and Project C, the NETPark community outreach programme designed to reach schools, community groups and other organisations to highlight the benefits of innovative science and technology to the region.

Recharging the Earth has been designed to raise awareness of sustainability issues and to encourage youngsters to consider the impact their lifestyle choices have on the world.

The schools will compete to collect non-rechargeable batteries for recycling, supporting the Government’s target to recycle 20% of all batteries by 2016.

In the second project, senior school pupils work with primary school children to create work reflecting where the planet will be in 25 years if sustainable choices are made and what will happen if they aren’t, with the competition final being held in July.
