Burglars Derek Howe and John McLaughlan jailed for eight years

John McLaughlan and Derek Howe who are both in jail after conning pensioners

DISTRACTION burglars Derek Howe and John McLaughlan have been jailed for targeting the homes of more than 21 frail and elderly pensioners.

The callous pair conned their way into properties across Tyne and Wear and County Durham, distracting the occupants while helping themselves to cash and valuables.

They chose to steal from pensioners aged between 70 and 96 who were too frail to put up a fight and likely to keep a large amount of cash in their homes.

During June and July last year they targeted homes in Newcastle, Gateshead, Chester-le-Street, East Boldon, Washington, Jarrow, and Hebburn.

But the cruel pair were finally snared when detectives from a specialist police team gathered enough evidence to link them to the crimes.

They have both been jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary.

In sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge David Wood said: “These cases are so serious only custody can be considered. The old people of Northumberland and Durham deserve a long rest from your activities.”
