Fight for Eglingham school's pupils is beginning

Last night, Laura Capper, Branton’s chairman of governors, said the school has made the request to the council to be put forward as part of the new catchment for Eglingham pupils.

Branton’s future is not under threat at present, with children travelling long distances to learn there and more pupils due to start in September and beyond.

But Mrs Capper said the school would welcome new pupils.

She said: “What we will do is make sure any parents of children going to move will be aware of where we are and we are happy to accept any application.

“No school knows what situation they are going to find themselves in, especially given the changes – that and government cutbacks. We are always pro-active and we are always thinking ahead. They were asked at this meeting to investigate it and I am sure they will be doing that.”

A council spokesperson said: “The purpose of this consultation is to find issues and consider them before and if we move forward.

“We’re pleased that this issue has been raised and it will be taken into consideration.”

A similar issue arose when Chatton school closed and governors at Eglingham hoped to be included when its catchment area was carved up.

However, their wishes were ignored and it was split between Belford and Wooler.

Eglingham school governor Ali Wrangham said: “As Eglingham governors, we want to make sure the children who are left at out school go where they want to.”
