Snow leaves residents with no mail and piles of rubbish

FRUSTRATED residents have been left with no mail and piles of post-Christmas rubbish as posties and binmen give snowy roads the cold shoulder.

Since December, villages and estates have been badly affected by the freezing weather, which has seen much of the North East blanketed by snow.

But as the ice thaws and roads clear many residents are turning their attention away from the weather and wondering why they’re still being left out in the cold by the postal service and refuse collectors.

Morris Cooper, 64, from Edmundbyers, near Consett, hasn’t had any mail since December 23. He said: “In the past week we have had no access problems because of the snow.

“The roads have been kept extremely clear by the council and yet we have had no postal deliveries for a week now and no explanation as to when the situation may change.

“I have seen buses operating in the village and courier services but no one from Royal Mail.”

Having contacted Royal Mail Mr Cooper says he has been met with an automated message telling him the adverse weather conditions are to blame.

A spokesman has since said they are unable to calculate the size of the backlog caused by the cold snap but they are working to keep mail moving as much as possible.
