Students land key roles at Newcastle airport
THESE airport ambassadors are doing their bit to promote the North East to tens of thousands of visitors to the region.
The youngsters are all students at Newcastle College and have been selected to carry out special volunteer jobs at the city’s airport.
More than 100 people have been chosen for the prestigious roles, which involve giving advice about top attractions and places to stay.
They will work alongside customer service staff and duty managers in the main terminal of Newcastle International.
Daniel Mawston, 18, who studies Level Three Aviation Operations at Newcastle College, said: “The ambassador scheme is a fantastic idea and something which I am really looking forward to being a part of.
“To be at the front line of a large organisation like Newcastle Airport is a very exciting challenge, especially when customer service plays such a huge part of their operations.”
The students who will be working as ambassadors have been nominated by their tutors at the college.
The idea of scheme is for them to be the first people to meet visitors arriving into the airport.
Their daily job will include meeting and greeting passengers, helping travellers locate their check-in desks, preparing them for the security search area, assisting with self service check-in at peak times and helping passengers with reduced mobility.
They will also be able to provide information about the airport’s facilities and the latest Metro or bus times.
The students, aged 16 and over, are studying a variety of courses from diplomas in air cabin crew to airline and airport management. Will Dougherty, operations director at Newcastle International, said: “Our ambassadors will have a crucial role in helping the airport achieve its main aim: to become recognised as the most welcoming airport in the UK.
“As we are the gateway for millions of passengers, we have worked extremely hard to improve the quality of the customer service we provide. We’re sure the Airport Ambassador scheme will provide a first-class customer experience. But just as importantly, these students are being given a great introduction into working in the aviation industry.
“By gaining a broad experience of customer service and on-the-job training, we hope to give these students the best start to their careers in aviation.”
Susan Davis, section manager at Newcastle College Lifestyle Academy, said: “Newcastle College is delighted to be working in partnership with Newcastle International Airport to bring this new and exciting initiative to life.
Passengers in need of any assistance are asked to look out for the Airport Ambassadors who will be wearing purple tabards. Their shifts will cover the airport’s busiest times: 8am-noon, 1pm- 4pm.
