Boldon pensioner hit by truck named as Fredrick Smith

A PENSIONER who died in hospital after being hit by a truck has been named by police.

Fredrick Smith was struck by a Volvo lorry on North Road, in Boldon Colliery, South Tyneside, at around 11.40am on Tuesday.

The 78-year-old pedestrian, of St Nicholas Road, Boldon, suffered serious leg injuries after the accident.

Police closed the road for nearly two hours while paramedics treated him at the scene. He was then taken to South Tyneside District Hospital but later died.

The crash is believed to have happened when the lorry was about to turn right from North Road into Reginald Street. Members of the public who were in the area called the emergency services.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: “We were informed by the ambulance service about a crash on North Road, in Boldon, on Tuesday morning. The vehicle involved stopped at the scene.
