ENGLAND cricket ace Stephen Harmison surprised youngsters at his former school yesterday when he dropped by to help them celebrate a special sport’s day.
The Durham fast bowler paid a visit to Bothal Middle School, in Ashington, for a ceremony after it achieved sports college status.
He also officially opened a new £500,000 refurbished sports block and took time out to wow young fans and showcase his bowling skills in a friendly game of cricket with students.
Harmison, who attended the school up until 1992, said the visit brought back memories of his days doing PE outdoors. “I loved PE, but I can remember when we played outside it was cold, but it was even colder inside.
“The place was falling to bits. My daughter is in Year 6 here at the school as well, so to see it now is fantastic.
“To make it into a sports college is great because I don’t think enough money goes into sports in schools. It’s great to look around the room and see so many smiling faces.”
Teachers and pupils at the college took part in a special sports day to mark the recent refurbishments to the sports block.
An extra 20% of pupils walked to school, in High Market, some walking from as far away as Pegswood, and were rewarded with a healthy cooked breakfast.
More than 500 pupils who attend the middle school took part in sports-related activities, including a cross country event.
Steve then presented winning youngsters with certificates and medals in an afternoon assembly.
Jill Waddle, 12, in Year 8, said: I think it’s great that we can get someone like Steve to come in.”
Another Year 8 pupil, Matthew Collins, 13, said: “It’s an honour for the school to have someone of his talent and ranking come here.”
Headteacher Andy Roberts said: “It is wonderful for Steve to come into the school.“
