Crash victim named

Watch manager at Ashington fire station, Phil Nicholson, said: “When we arrived the car was in some bushes. It appears to have left the road and collided with a tree.

“The driver was trapped and one of the passengers was in a very bad way.

“We cut one of the doors and pulled back the roof.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At approximately 2.50am on Thursday, November 26, a fatal road traffic collision occurred at the A197, Whorrall Bank, in Morpeth.

“For reasons yet to be established, the vehicle involved, a blue Renault Megane motor vehicle, left the carriageway to the nearside as it travelled in a northerly direction.

“The collision resulted in the death of Liam Charles Hawley, who was 19 years and was an occupant in the vehicle.”

The road was closed from the junction of the new Pegswood bypass into the centre of Morpeth but was later reopened. No other vehicle was involved in the incident. Police are now appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police motor patrols on 03456 043 043 ext 61374.

A tribute site had been set up on social networking site Facebook yesterday.

One friend said: “My heart goes out to Andy and Julie – can’t imagine what they are going through losing such a wonderful son. Hope you are in a better place now. Our world will never forget you. Rest in peace, your gunna be a big miss to everyone.”

Police said his family were too distressed to talk about the accident.
