A NEW life proved to be plain sailing for Jonny and Kate Harrison when they decided to move Down Under – the long way round.
Set on moving to Australia, the couple decided to sail there themselves, covering 16,250 nautical miles and dropping in on 22 different countries on their way.
Their voyage of discovery started two years ago when they had a discussion which was to change their lives forever.
Mr Harrison, 27, was working as an accountant for PricewaterhouseCoopers while his wife was training to be a maths teacher in Newcastle, when they decided to sail from the UK to Australia.
He said: “My wife had taken a gap year and loved Australia. She really wanted to live there again so we decided to go out and take some time off.
“But then the opportunity came up to work down under and Kate said: ‘Why don’t we sail there?’”
On their trip the couple passed through some of the most dangerous and beautiful seas, oceans and places in the world. They visited pearl farms in Manihi, caught exotic fish at the side of their boat – a 37 foot-long, 11 foot-wide Colvic motor cruiser – and saw traditional Polynesian dances in a colourful ceremony.
