Night classes in forensic science begin

SUPER sleuths are to get the chance to test their little grey cells.

Due to the popularity of American police dramas, such as Crime Scene Investigation, requests for forensic science courses have soared.

And Newcastle College has responded to the demand by launching a new evening class.

Starting next April and running for 10 weeks, it will cover the basics in forensics, DNA analysis and criminal psychology.

It will run as a part-time class aimed at adults who either want to progress onto further study, or who just have an interest in forensic science.

There will also be opportunities to progress to the next step on the route to studying forensic science through the college’s one year access course and degree level qualifications. Newcastle College has seen an increased interest from all age groups and has the facilities to stage a mock crime scene, complete with finger-printing and a fake decomposing body.

Gordon Crombie, from the college’s School of Applied Science and Technology, said: “Television programmes, such as CSI, have really raised the profile of forensic science.

“This course is ideal for anyone who wants to develop their skills and knowledge whether they just have an interest in the area or are looking to progress to further study.

“We work closely with scene of crime experts to ensure our courses give people the skills required by industry.”

Details of the course can be found in Newcastle College’s latest part-time adult prospectus, by calling the college directly on (0191) 200-4000 or by visiting www.newcastlecollege.co.uk
