Robbers target couple at home in Durham City

The Willows

A RETIRED businessman and his wife were recovering yesterday after they were tied up and robbed in their own home.

Clifford and Pamela Taylor, both in their sixties, were tied up in separate rooms after three masked robbers burst into their luxury detached home in a cul-de-sac at The Willows, Carrville, Durham City.

The couple’s terrifying ordeal began when Mrs Taylor, 60, answered a knock on the door on Friday evening.

Balaclava-clad robbers burst into the house and quickly overpowered the shocked couple.

One of the robbers, who was armed with a hammer, threatened Mr Taylor and took him to an upstairs room where he forced him to open two safes.

About £1,000 in cash was taken, as was some distinctive jewellery.

Police believe the robbers fled in a dark 4x4 type vehicle.

Det Chief Insp Steve Winship said the robbery began at about 6.05pm on Friday and the couple both suffered minor bruising during the incident.

Mr Taylor, he said, had tried to struggle with the robbers.

He added: "This was a serious incident and the couple were clearly shocked by the events. They were left tied up in the study but managed to raise the alarm with neighbours."

The money stolen was £500 in sterling, 450 US dollars and 200 euros. The jewellery included rings, bracelets and watches, most of which were of sentimental value.

DCI Winship said: "We are appealing to anyone with information, in particular any witnesses who saw suspicious activity in the area about 6pm on Friday.

"We are also appealing to travel shops and post offices which may have been asked to change foreign currency at the weekend or since.

"Some of the jewellery was distinctive and we are also asking if anyone has been offered jewellery at knockdown prices."

The three men were all about 5ft 7in, in their early 20s, with local accents and wore dark clothing, including balaclavas.

Mrs Taylor declined to comment at her home yesterday.

Locals said the couple used to run a family timber business in Durham which had since been sold. One, who asked not to be named, said: "This is a very quiet cul-de-sac and to know it has been targeted by robbers is frightening."
