THOUSANDS across the North East will wear their poppies with pride this weekend as sombre events are held to mark Remembrance Day.
Here are the main events this Sunday to attend in memory of our region’s war heroes:
In Newcastle, 101 Regiment Royal Artillery will lead the city’s main parade in Eldon Square, which starts at 10am from the top of Percy Street.
MPs, dignitaries and the Lord Mayor will look on as gunfire marks a two-minute silence. A short service will then take place in Old Eldon Square.
In Gateshead, a parade will commence at 10.15am at the Cenotaph, preceded by a marching contingent made up from the TA, the British Legion, Cadets and Naval Reserves.
The marching contingent will include 72 Engineer Regiment and 299 Para Squadron Royal Engineers, and a short service will take place at the Cenotaph.
In Hebburn, a military parade will leave Hebburn Civic Centre at 10am for a service at St John’s Church.
The parade will then reform and march to the War Memorial at Carr Ellison Park for another service at 10.55am, then on to Hebburn Cemetery, Kelly Grave, for a further service. Councillor John McCabe will lay a wreath on behalf of South Tyneside Council.
Durham Cathedral will hold a service of remembrance from 10.15am, before a military and civilian contingent will march through to the city’s Market Square. In Northumberland, there will be wreath-laying ceremonies in Alnwick and Ashington, with a large church service held at St Paul’s church in Alnwick at 2.30pm.
