Newcastle College students dream up eco-friendly designs

He said: “One idea I had was to grow a creeping plant over all the city’s ugly buildings, but I thought trees would complement Grey Street.”

Michael Hyde came up with solar-powered LED lights which could be used in parts of the world where electricity is not readily available.

The college worked with Premier Waste Management on the project to life, with head of marketing Tony Hitchens giving the students feedback on their ideas.

Their finished creations will be showcased at a public exhibition in December, where Premier will judge and award the winning design with £500.

Mr Hitchens said: “This is about putting these thoughts in their heads before they start on their career and making them aware of the implications their designs can have for the planet.”

Tutor Simon Bolam said: “The concept of sustainable design is going to become normal in the future.”
