Cheryl Cole solo single goes to number one in charts

CHERYL Cole has spoken of her joy after she stormed to the top of the charts with her debut solo single.

The Newcastle-born star, 26, knocked X Factor winner Alexandra Burke from top spot with her single Fight For This Love.

She said: “I’m just getting over the fact I have recorded my solo record and now it’s number 1.

“I can’t take this all in. It’s hard for me to put into words how I feel. I have this permanent smile on my face.”

The Official Charts Company said she had smashed the record for fastest-selling single of the year so far with over 290,000 sales.

The previous fastest-selling single of 2009 so far was last week’s number one, Alexandra Burke’s Bad Boys which sold over 185,000 copies in its first week.

Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company, said: “Many congratulations to Cheryl Cole on her fantastic achievement.

“Other than X-Factor winners, very few singles get anywhere near 300,000 sales in their first week.

“In doing just that this week, Cheryl has shown just what a favourite she is with the British music-buying public.”

The news caps a stunning few weeks for Cheryl. The Girls Aloud singer clinched a prestigious contract with hair care specialist L’Oreal and continued to win a new army of fans with the warmth of her performances as a judge on The X Factor.

But Alexandra Burke still had reason to smile as her album Overcome claimed number one spot.

She also held on to second spot in the singles chart.

She said: “I want to say massive congratulations to my girl Cheryl on the success of her single this week. She has been a massive inspiration to me over the last 12 months and I can’t wait to celebrate with her.”

“Having a No.1 album is genuinely a dream a come true, life just keeps getting better and better.”
