A BIRD of prey has suffered “serious” injuries after it was shot while out flying in Northumberland.

The young buzzard, which had hatched this year, was sprayed with pellets during the shooting in Alnwick.

Officers from the RSPB were called to Broome Wood, near Alnwick Moor, where they found the bird with a bullet hole through its left wing.

The young common buzzard also suffered injuries to its body.

Police are appealing for any information about the shooting, which happened on Wednesday, September 16.

Northumberland area command wildlife officer, PC Andy Swinburne, said: “It is very worrying and upsetting to find a bird of this nature that appears to have been illegally shot.

“Generally, there are a small minority of people who are persecuting birds of prey, but it is too early to say whether this is the case in this instance.

“The buzzard is a protected bird under the Wildlife and Countryside Act so it is illegal to shoot them.

“The bird had damage to its feathers which was consistent with being shot, but at this moment, we can’t determine whether it has been deliberate or accidental.

“I would urge any members of the public who can assist in this case or any other wildlife crime to come forward. Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence.”
