Allendale piano becomes tuneful work of art

A PIANO which has provided the soundtrack to one village’s summer has been turned into a tuneful work of art.

For the past two months, the now well-known and much-loved piano, has been standing outside the Pebbles Gallery on Shield Street in Allendale, Northumberland, available to be played by any passer by who fancied having a tinkle.

During that time, it has been played every day, come rain or shine, with residents being treated to an impromptu setlist, which has been as varied as it has been delightful.

Chopsticks, old war tunes, entries from Sting’s back catalogue, sonatas by Beethoven and a tribute to Madness are among the hundreds of ditties which have been played out.

Now at the end of its outdoor residency, a group of artists from the Pebbles Gallery have each chosen a piece of the piano’s make up, and decorated it in their own inimitable way.

The result is a unique collection of artwork and musical memories of summer days in Allendale – all to be sold to the highest bidder at the annual Allendale Lions charity auction, which opens for viewings at 9am today.

“The whole project has been absolutely wonderful,” said Amanda Galbraith, chair of the Allendale creative artists, who reside at the Gallery.
