Clarke and Cable back our Go Global campaign

“The Journal is absolutely right to say that protectionist measures will not help business in the region.

“You produce goods and services of the highest quality and finding new markets abroad will bring jobs and prosperity to the North East. The very best of luck with your campaign.”

Mr Cable, added: “I very strongly support it.

“British manufacturers and other exporters have had some help from the competitive exchange rate.

“But they need more encouragement because Britain is going to have to get its finances back in balance.”

The comments come after Trade Minister Lord Davies also backed the campaign and highlighted support available to North East firms to export from the UK Trade and Investment agency.

The campaign was earlier backed by North East Minister Nick Brown who said the region had much to offer the world and that the “opportunities” are out there for local firms.

And Labour MP for Houghton and Washington East Fraser Kemp said: “It is a great time for the North East to punch above its weight as it has done so in the past.”
