Everyday objects to join antiques in new display

YOUR favourite childhood toy, a treasured item of clothing, or a photo from the past could feature in an exhibition alongside genuine historical artefacts.
The National Trust is asking people to nominate their favourite objects for a competition.
The best, selected by a panel of judges, including Hilary Kay, the BBC Antiques Roadshow expert, will go on display at National Trust properties.
In the North East the winning item will be shown at Wallington Hall next spring as part of Treasure Forever.
The aim of the competition is to highlight everyday objects and items which have special meaning to their owners, rather than antiques or heirlooms of high monetary value.
Objects could include a photograph or letter that tells a fascinating personal story, a sporting trophy or a favourite childhood book or toy.
From September 1 to November 1 people will be invited to send a photo of their favourite keepsake together with up to 100 words explaining the story behind it.
The public will help the judges choose the winners by voting on the competition website.
Hilary Kay said: “During my life in antiques I have seen thousands of treasured objects and heard the fascinating stories that go with them. The best of these help bring to life the people and the lives of past times.”
Katy Lithgow, the National Trust’s head conservator and one of the judges, said: “Everyone’s stories tell an important part of our heritage and this competition is a great way for the public to share the tales behind their favourite things.”
As part of Treasure Forever, more than 80 Trust properties, including Wallington and Souter Lighthouse will be hosting special events this autumn to share stories of objects in the collections and how they are looked after.
