NUFC star Danny Guthrie banned for driving at 101 mph

“He saw an Audi Q7 vehicle travelling northbound on the A696 Woolsington bypass where the speed limit is 70mph.

“The vehicle was travelling at 101mph and PC Reid pulled it over.

“The driver was found to be Mr Guthrie. He was notified of the speed he was travelling at and he responded ‘OK’.”

Road safety group Brake, who originally urged magistrates to disqualify Guthrie and issue a fine proportionate to his means, said his sentence was still too lenient.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We would like high speeds, such as those over 100mph, to be given a penalty the same as dangerous driving, which would give out a clearer message.

“A three-week ban is not enough to act as a deterrent as it’s hardly going to inconvenience him. Also a £1,000 fine, when you’re on a footballer’s wage, does not seem very much.

“We would like to reiterate that financial punishments for speeding should be based on a person’s means.”
