Artist Geoff Farley’s North East scenes exhibition

THE Journal would be the first to admit its loading bay from which newspapers are dispatched is no oil painting.
But artist Geoff Farley would beg to differ.
The bay off Pudding Chare in the centre of Newcastle is one of Geoff’s paintings which are featured in an exhibition of his work which opens tomorrow at Northumbria University’s gallery until September 4.
Geoff, 56, who lives in Morpeth, is attracted by everyday buildings and views.
Instead of painting classic scenes like Newcastle’s Grey Street, Geoff has turned out studies such as the garage opposite the new city centre library, the Co-op store in Newgate Street, views from Byker Bridge of the former Ford Street school and the chimney in Ouse Street, both in the Lower Ouseburn Valley in Newcastle, and the Brett Oils building on the Gateshead riverfront.
He has also chosen to portray the workaday Metro Bridge rather than the historic Tyne or High Level bridges. Geoff trained and worked as a civil engineer with Castle Morpeth and Chester-le-Street councils before becoming a full-time artist three years ago.
