Hotspur Primary School pupils make lego angel

Pupils at Hotspur Primary play with Lego after the school made a metre high Angel of the North out of Lego

IMAGINATIVE children from Tyneside have made a monster out of our angel.

Pupils at Hotspur Primary School, in Heaton, Newcastle, were tasked with recreating the iconic Angel of the North using only Lego blocks.

The children were given a scaled-down brick model of the famous Gateshead landmark and asked to put together their own version.

The model was broken down and, using the original bricks, they transformed it to make the "Monster on the Mound".

Year 3 class teacher, Laura Moore, said: "The idea behind the project was that Lego is something that can be destroyed, reused and reworked and we thought it would be good to ask the children for their interpretation of the Angel.

"Before the building began, we held class discussions about what the Angel stood for and what they would like to make.

"They seemed quite set on the idea of making a monster, as that’s the exact opposite of what the Angel is.

"The children drew their monsters and we took ideas from different ones to make our final creation."

Dora Moffatt, seven, said: "It was really fun to do; I helped to make the legs with my team.

"I’ve seen pictures of the Angel of the North, but I’ve never been to it. I preferred the colour of our monster to the Angel, but I think the Angel looks really good."

Classmate Alexander Jefferson, eight, said: "I enjoyed designing it, but I enjoyed making it more. I got to build parts of the body."

The children were set the task by Lego UK, which has been visiting schools across the UK with similar projects.
