Trekkers take to African desert to help hospice

TWO trekkers are set to cross part of the world’s hottest desert in aid of charity.
North walkers Stef Pendleton and Gary Tyzak are both set to jet out to Africa later this year and spend three gruelling days walking in the Sahara.
The two fundraisers have both had parents affected by cancer and are completing the trek to raise cash for the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle. The pair will fly out to Er Rachidia in Morocco. From there they will embark on an adventure that will see them walk with a camel caravan through Kasbahs, Berber villages, palm groves and have to climb windswept sand dunes 170 metres high.
Gary, 27, from Sunderland decided to take part in the once-in-a-lifetime experience after both his parents were cared for at the centre in the West End of Newcastle.
The trainee audiologist said: “Knowing that there are places like the Marie Curie Hospice is such a comfort. Doing the trek has given me renewed focus and a determination to be part of something that will go directly towards the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle.”
The hospice cares for around 400 in patients each year as well as offering a day service for those suffering from cancer. The trek is set to take place in November.
