Denise returns to Uganda to see how much she has helped

“I was so affected by it when I came back that I began fundraising.
“The thing that upset me was that the boy was that Fred never smiled. He had this massive responsibility of looking after his little brother and had to ration everything they ate. But seeing the state of the country makes you realise that we are lucky to live as we do. I’m thrilled with their progress, they are truly remarkable young men, I’m proud of them.”
While in Uganda, Denise also met 27-year-old Betasi, who had been diagnosed as HIV positive and whose husband and son had been killed by aids. She was left to look after her 11-year-old daughter Scovia.
And Denise persuaded her to visit a clinic to receive treatment that would prolong her life and give her precious time with her daughter. There was also a joyful re-union between Denise and Mercy Ainembabaze – the girl that she met when she was just six and has sponsored for many years.
The agony aunt said: “Mercy is now 12 and I know her life is much improved because she writes regularly, but it was a joy to see her again.” To find out more about World Vision or about sponsoring a child log onto www.worldvision.org.uk or call 0800 501010.
