Youngsters have fun at Sandcastle Challenge

Pupil Jake Jones, eight, said: “It’s been the best day of my life.

“I’ve enjoyed working as a team and I collected water from the sea to help the sand stick together.”

Luckily, the children were able to complete their sand designs before the heavens opened in the afternoon.

Charlie Nelson, seven, from Harton Infants School, in South Shields, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the day. We should do things like this more often.

“I liked designing our sandcastles but making them has been even better.”

Classmate Macey-Mae Mackie, also seven, said: “I thought it would be a lot more difficult to make our sandcastles, but it was really fun.

“I think we should have more lessons outside.”

Teacher Stephanie Robson said: “We brought about 60 children along and this is the first time we taken part in the challenge.

“The theme was ‘then and now’, so we built an old-fashioned book and a computer, to represent modern technology.”

The sand designs were judged and prizes were awarded for the best.
