Youngsters have fun at Sandcastle Challenge

MORE than 2,000 Tyneside children swapped their classrooms for the beach yesterday to build some elaborate sand structures.

The event, which was held on Sandhaven Beach, in South Shields, was the 15th annual Children North East’s Sandcastle Challenge.

Youngsters from 46 primary schools from across the region took part.

The theme was “Then and Now” and the children were tasked with building 3D artwork based on things they have been studying at school, including communication and transport.

The event is run each year by the charity Children North East and is supported by GB Building Solutions, Royal Institute of British Architects North East, James Burrell Builders Merchants and Ian Larnach Associates.

Help was on hand on the day from building professionals.

Youngsters from Oakfield Junior School, in Gateshead, built an old-fashioned car alongside a modern sports model.

They also created a traditional, Victorian woman, next to a modern figure, which the youngsters said was inspired by Geordie pop star, Cheryl Cole.
