Edna rewarded for 40 years of RNLI fundraising

“Over the years, I have helped with things like coffee mornings, collection flag days, selling Christmas cards and souvenirs. I have found that people are very receptive to us when we approach them.

“Our events are always well attended and families are willing to help and support the RNLI.”

Edna was a committee member for many years, then became vice-chairman before being appointed chairman in 1986, only retiring this year.

In addition to the fundraising, she has also been active in other areas and would always be seen manning a stall at the annual Tynemouth RNLI Harbour Day, and continues to open up her home for guild meetings.

Michael Charlton, RNLI area fundraising manager, said: “Edna has been fundraising for the RNLI for longer than most of the current Tynemouth lifeboat crew have been alive.

“She has seen many changes within the RNLI and I am sure she will agree the level of equipment and training provided is now of the highest standard, all made possible by the work of the lifeboat guilds and their members. Edna joined the guild in 1966 and it’s not possible to say how many lives have been saved through the funds she has raised.”
