TV star is awarded honorary degree from Durham

FORMER Tomorrow’s World presenter, broadcaster and author, Judith Hann, was awarded an honorary degree from Durham University yesterday.

Judith, who presented the popular science programme for 20 years, graduated from Durham in 1964 with an honours degree in zoology.

Yesterday’s degree ceremony took place in Durham Cathedral and others will be held at the prestigious venue until Friday.

Meanwhile, actors, television presenters, a cricketer and a high-ranking civil servant will be among those being honoured by another North East university later this month.

Durham-born actors Wendy Craig and Alun Armstrong, along with BBC presenter Lauren Laverne, will receive honorary awards from Sunderland University in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

They will be joined by thousands of graduates who will be given awards by university Chancellor Steve Cram during the week-long celebration at the Stadium of Light, beginning July 13.

Wendy Craig has enjoyed a long and successful acting career, gracing stage and screen.

Alun Armstrong has enjoyed an eminent acting career – appearing in numerous blockbusters, independent films, various television productions and musical theatre. Seaburn-born Lauren Laverne is one of Sunderland’s greatest advocates. She first became known after forming the band Kinickie with two school friends and her brother Pete when she was 15.

Also receiving honorary awards during the week are Durham County Cricket coach Geoff Cook, historian and film-maker Michael Wood, Alice in Sunderland author Bryan Talbot, former top civil servant Sir Peter Carr, entrepreneur Duncan Goose, police officer Gary Shaw and businessman John Wood.
