LIFE has suddenly got a whole lot tougher for Warmseal Durham Senior League club Seaham Harbour after they were deducted 30 points for a breach of league rules.
Harbour, who were already 15 points adrift at the foot of the table, suffered the penalty after a player registration issue arose and they now face a season-long battle to stave off the threat of relegation.
With the season reaching its halfway point today, Harbour need to lift their heads quickly if they are to survive and they start the process with a home game against Durham City. With Simon Weston unavailable for the game, the return from holiday of Neil McKinney proves extremely timely.
At the opposite end of the table, John Dunn makes his seasonal league debut for Whitburn as they take on title rivals Hetton Lyons, while batsmen Lee Henderson and Elliott Markham replace bowlers Dan Quinan and Ian Elliott as the home side seek to beef up their batting line-up for this match.
Horden face champions Burnmoor without their West Indian ‘pro’. Kelbert Walters has been called into the Anguilla Under-19 team and the club are urgently seeking a replacement fast bowler. But at least they won’t have to face Jimmy Daley today with the ex-Durham man at a wedding.
Elsewhere, leaders Boldon entertain Marsden, South Hetton play Philadelphia and Felling take on Eppleton. There is a classic head to head in the Readers Durham County League where leaders Shildon face up to form team Willington.
The sides have identical playing records, and both are undefeated to date, so something will have to give. The Railwaymen’s only doubt is over Balou Krishnan who has a hamstring injury, while their visitors are back to full strength with the return of Greg Pringle and Mumtaz Habib. There is every chance the youngsters will share the opening attack after impressing recently.
