A NORTH East beauty spot became the scene of a massive beach party when it was invaded by more than 300 students.
The youngsters were celebrating the 50-year life of their school before it went out of existence.
And the sun helped everything go with a swing yesterday as Newbiggin Middle School was moved to Druridge Bay beach in Northumberland for the day.
The 350-student school closes in July with the opening of the Hirst Academy.
Bedlington-based Benet Enterprises was contracted by the Wansbeck Enterprise Education Network to work with the pupils to organise the beach party.
Its business manager Lyndsey Archbold said: “The event is to celebrate 50 years of life at the school and to also give the children a day to remember as the school will close in July due to the opening of Hirst Academy.’’
The students enjoyed games, sandcastle competitions and sports. Entertainment was provided by Secret Squirrel who ran drama and game workshops with the Year Five and Six students.
Dance Northumberland conducted circus skills and dance workshops for Years 7 and 8 and also a fire-breathing display for the whole school. A live band, Painted North, performed and the whole school performed in the main park where a marquee was installed. They were followed by a game show run by The Panto Company which saw year 5 and 6 go head to head with year 7 and 8.
Graham Mitcheson, site manager at Druridge Bay Country Park, said: “There are a lot of them on the beach and a lot of them in the main event park.
“They have a nice day for it and they seem to be enjoying themselves. There aren’t vast number of visitors here at this time of year but they were watching the event with interest.’’
