Cash and drugs seized in Sunderland raids

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson

CASH, drugs and vehicles were seized in a series of raids targeting organised crime gangs.

Officers visited a number of properties in Sunderland in operations by Northumbria Police’s new Total Policing Task Force.

Following a search of an address at Ashbrooke Mount, in the city, around £30,000 in cash was recovered, along with around 2,000 tablets.

The pills are believed to be illegal drugs and are currently being subjected to a scientific analysis to determine what they are. A 65-year old man from Sunderland has been arrested on suspicion of importing a class-C drug.

Det Supt Peter Farrell, of the Task Force, said: “Illegal drugs, whatever the type, usually involve profit for criminals, have a harmful impact upon peoples’ safety, the use of violence and the exercise of control.

“This is why the vast majority of people don’t want them in circulation within their communities. That’s why Northumbria Police will go after those who supply drugs illegally.” A day earlier, Task Force officers executed search warrants at houses at Freesia Gardens and Rutland Avenue, along with a business premises on Hepworth Road in connection with a separate investigation into insurance fraud.
