THE finalists are today announced for this year’s North East Schools Awards. The awards – which are run by The Journal in association with our sister paper on Teesside, the Evening Gazette, and main sponsors Northumbrian Water – are now in their third year.

The shortlist of finalists in each of the 10 categories is being announced today, with schools in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside all in the running for prizes.

There will be five individual prizes for top primary school teacher, secondary school teacher, headteacher, support staff and caretaker.

And there will be five prizes for work done in schools: School Newspapers, Sustainable Schools, Healthy Living Award, the Environment Award and Active Community.

One of the prizewinners will also be chosen to hold the prestigious title of North East School of the Year

Journal editor Brian Aitken said: “The Journal is proud to run many awards but the Schools awards are very special and something of which we are particularly proud.

“All of the finalists deserve a pat on the back and are more than deserving of their place on the shortlist.”

The awards take place on July 2 at Newcastle’s International Centre for Life.
