Serious injuries to Blyth assault victim’s face

The entrance to Blyth South Harbour, where police found an injured man

A NORTHUMBERLAND man was found with serious facial injuries close to his smashed up car after being assaulted.

The 45-year-old man from the Blyth area was found at the entrance to the Port of Blyth South Harbour on Wensleydale Terrace shortly after 1am on Saturday.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the man was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital for treatment.

A Volkswagen Golf car belonging to the injured man was parked around 30 yards further south and had been damaged.

It had broken windows and damage to the car body which police believe is linked to the man’s injuries.

Officers also believe the incident may be linked to an altercation at the Ridley Park Hotel on Wensleydale Terrace earlier on Friday evening. Staff at the hotel said an argument had taken place between a man and a woman and that they had immediately left the premises.

The injured man was expected to be released from hospital last night and may be transferred to Newcastle General for further treatment.

No arrests had been made and police were continuing their inquiries, knocking on doors, and appealing for witnesses. Extra patrols have been put on duty to reassure the public.

People living on Wensleydale Terrace last night knew little of what had happened as many were asleep in bed. Some reported police having cordoned off a long stretch of the street, south of the hotel.

Others saw police cars at the scene at around 2am on Saturday and had officers call at their door later that day.
