Thousands of hopeful punters took advantage of yesterday’s good weather to attend one of the highlights of the North East racing season.

Posh frocks, hats and high heels were all on display as groups of ladies tried to outdo each other in the fashion stakes. The meet, which was the final event of the year before the summer break, was sponsored by Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV) – a charity which allows underprivileged children from all over the world to come to the region for a holiday.

While much of the fashion press may have been concentrating on Ascot earlier in the week, North East women demonstrated that they wouldn’t be outdone.

Among them was birthday girl Christine Rutherford. The 26-year-old from Hexham attended with a group of friends. She said: “We are having a great day out. Luckily the weather has stayed really nice so we are making the most of it.
