Welcoming over 200 people representing those who have been involved in the venture, Gateshead Mayor John Eagle said: “With a name like mine you would expect that I have a particularly keen interest in the red kites and indeed this has been a fantastic project.”
Gateshead Council leader Mick Henry said: “This has been a groundbreaking and memorable project which has achieved so much more than anyone ever thought. The red kites have seized everyone’s imagination.
“From day one the project as confounded people’s expectations in the best possible way. Releasing the birds so close to urban Tyneside has given so many people the chance to be close to red kites, and the local economy has benefited. It has brought these stunning birds into the heart of the region and into people’s hearts.”
Rob Aubrook, Natural England regional director, said: “Of especial importance is the way that so many children have become involved, because it is they who will make a difference in the future.”
Northern Kites project officer Keith Bowey said: “Everybody at the event has symbolised the many people who have helped make the red kites fly across the region once again.”
Northern Kites is a partnership between Natural England, the RSPB, Gateshead Council, Northumbrian Water, the National Trust and the Forestry Commission with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and SITA Trust.
The giant kite’s image was drawn by Alan Hart who, as well as being a wildlife artist, has been a Northern Kites volunteer since 2004. The photograph was taken by Kaleel Zibe of www.KaleelZibe.com
