Tyne Tunnel waste heap to go on green belt land

The application, by Sirius Remediation Ltd, will be discussed by a South Tyneside Council planning committee next week.

Three letters of objection were received by the council, including one from the Horseshoe Day Centre, in Follonsby Terrace, raising concerns of potential noise and dust.

But officers are recommending the plan is granted. They say the storage would not harm the green belt and conditions could be imposed to make sure residents and businesses are not affected by noise and dust.

The conditions include running machinery and lorry trips only between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Fridays, and 8am and 4pm on Saturdays. There would be no work on Sundays and bank holidays.

Wheel wash facilities and a dust management plan would be prepared to prevent mud and dirt being transferred. In addition, bunds and seeded boundaries would be erected to screen the site.

The report adds: “The proposal would only create one new job at the application site.

“However, contracts to move the material for local haulage operators would be available and complement the significant Tyne and Wear labour force currently employed on the New Tyne Crossing project.

“Approval of the application would enable the construction of the New Tyne Crossing to proceed on schedule.”
