A PRIZE memento of Newcastle United’s Fairs Cup win 40 years ago will be auctioned off in London today.
A pennant presented by United’s European final opponents Ujpest Dozsa on the pitch before the first leg of the tie at St James’s Park will be sold by Bonham’s with an estimate of £1,000-£1,200,
It has been put up for sale by Colin Fairley, whose father ran the now demolished Black and White pub in Blenheim Street, Newcastle, which was a favourite with the fans and United players.
In the boardroom, during a tour of the ground, the late Ted Fairley fell into conversation with the then United manager Joe Harvey about the successful Fairs Cup run.
Colin, who was also on the tour, said: “My dad looked at the pennant and said ‘happy memories’, and Joe Harvey took it out of its glass case and gave it to my dad.
“He had been to all the Fairs Cup games, and the pub was painted black and white, inside and out, with lots of United memorabilia and it even had stripes on the roof.
