INNOVATIVE theatre will be breathing new life into Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend from tomorrow.
On a site more used to staging historic re-enactments, puppets and party food will be the order of the day in Left Luggage Theatre’s presentation of alveus: solstice.
Running until Saturday, the production is inspired by Segedunum – whose reconstructed bath house is the only working Roman example in Europe – and is the result of the Newcastle-based theatre company working at the fort since March.
The group became involved with the local community and North Tyneside Youth Theatre while building their multi-layered story about the people of Wallsend.
This is the first full-scale project in the region for the company, whose work has involved commissions to create bespoke shows for festivals across the UK and for the Brit Awards 08 After Show Party.
Alison Garner, co-artistic director, said: “We have now woven the threads of this collaborative work with echoes of mythic tales and layers of hidden stories to create the professional show.” And audiences at alveus: solstice are being promised a mix of puppetry, song, dance plus party food – and the unexpected. Performances take place tomorrow at 7pm and 9pm; Friday at 7pm; and Saturday at 7pm and 9pm.
Availability is limited so tickets should be booked in advance. They are available from Segedunum in Buddle Street or by calling (0191) 643-7093. They cost £6 (£4 concessions) in advance; £8 (£5 concessions) on the night. Alveus: solstice is suitable for those aged 14-plus only.
