Young writers use creativity to change the world

YOUNG authors who wrote a book on the subject of climate change will launch an exhibition of their work today.

The Climate Change Schools Project’s book, launched last year, was written by 250 youngsters from around the region.

The pupils, aged seven to 15, contributed their thoughts and images on the issue of global warming. The aim was to put climate change at the heart of not only North East schools, but also the national curriculum.

Now an exhibition featuring original artwork from the book will be on show at Seven Stories, the Centre for Children’s Books in Newcastle over the summer.

It will feature designs by Sally Gray, 14, from Dr Thomlinson Middle School, Rothbury, the book’s main artist. The logo which she designed has been used on all materials associated with the Climate Change Schools Project, including school resources and an electric Smart Car currently being driven around the region.

The book includes a foreword by international author and Durham University Chancellor Bill Bryson.

Dr Krista McKinzey, Climate Change Schools Project Officer and manager, said: “The young contributors to this book have also provided their views on why climate change is important to them, and the foreword by Bill Bryson captures the spirit of these young people. The outstanding artwork on display this summer at Seven Stories sets a positive challenge to everyone who will view the exhibition.”
