Illustrator Robert Ingpen visits Seven Stories

TALES of Mole, Ratty, Badger and Toad were brought to life when an award-winning illustrator popped in to Seven Stories.

Australian Robert Ingpen was the highlight at an exhibition over the weekend, in his only appearance in the UK this year.

From Toad Hall to Pooh Corner was the central feature of the exhibition, where work was showcased at the centre for children’s books in Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle.

Mr Ingpen was given the challenge of re-illustrating Kenneth Graeme’s famous Wind in the Willows as part of its centenary celebration.

A unique drawing technique helped the imaginative Aussie encapsulate the English countryside in all its colour and beauty while helping to capture the imagination of the reader. Mr Ingpen’s drawings were based on his friends to help develop the various human characteristics of each animal.

And children were enable to rediscover the magic of its famous characters.

Families also enjoyed walking through the pages of Winnie the Pooh.

Exhibitions curator Lynda Jackson said: “It was an exciting opportunity for families to enjoy a story, to meet Robert and ask questions about his work. It’s such a popular exhibition that really brings his illustrations to life.”

The exhibition is the first of many events in a packed summer of fun at Seven Stories. To find out more visit www.sevenstories.org.uk or call 0845 271-0777
